A Sense of Scale

To encourage you to visit: We live in a town with lovely contemporary architecture, easy public transport, and delicious food. And you can see all of the Darmstadt highlights in a day.

That sounds so small to my Chicago-big-city-ears and so inaccurate to my daily experience of wandering about with Ben. It would take days to visit the best playgrounds (conveniently located near sites of beauty) and snack places and forests we have found combined with the daily rituals of take midday nap, learning some German, reading stories, etc. (In contrast, I diligently struggle to make time to take 1 daytrip outside of Darmstadt per week.)

However, 3 groups of guests later and it is very clear: A day or a day and half of moving at traveler speed and most are ready for some place else to explore. So, for those of you with large wanderlust plans (complete with check lists of amazing European countries and sites to see) we are just 20 minutes away from the Frankfurt airport and a great jumping off point for castle tours, apfelwein and beer tours, rhine tours.

However, this also seems strange to me. The countries (den LĂ„ndern) are the size of US states (and the states (die Saaten) are the size of counties) - are there so many countries and things outside of our town so close? Don't we need to travel for hours or days? Our latest guests were mildly disappointed that we casually mentioned nearby Frankenstein's castle as we drove by it on the last day of their visit as the sun was setting after a day of castle storming. There are just so many castles and so little time.
